Religious Education

Welcome to the RE Department

Two initial aims of the R.E. Department are to develop more fieldwork opportunities and to build upon the links already forged with local religious groups.  We would also like to start a new Fair Trade Cafe in room 14 where most RE lessons are based. If there is sufficient support, then we may start a Fair Trade Co-operative.

The following poem gives an idea of the key themes that are explored during Years 7-9.

R.S. IS ?
Are you ethical?
Are you moral?
Are you rhapsodical?
Do you quarrel?
Do you like to end cruel strife?
Do you ponder on da meaning of life?
Do you tink 'bout da chicken 'n' egg,
The Universe's origin - and its end,
Why do people believe in God,
When there's war and suffering,
(Might strike you as odd)
Human rights, responsibility too,
Citizens argue, philosophers muse,
Life and death, brain, mind and soul,
You study these in R.S., you study these whole,
So whether you write, act, dance or sing,
You'll quickly find,
(Just use your mind)
R.S.is................
EVERYTHING!

Below are some poems written by Yr 9 students about death and life after death.

Enterprise, RE, The Environment and Healthy Eating

Part of a Yr 10 RE Day when students looked at Religion and the Environment, involved a talk from Clare Gerbrands, the key organiser of Gloucestershire Farmers Markets.  Clare talked about seasonality, ecology, economics, profitability, sustainability and spirituality.

Clare was then able to act as a role model to students for showing enterprise in business and in life.  Clare brought in a quiz on seasonality, together with organic strawberries as prizes.  She was very impressed with some of the points raised by Yr 10s and felt pleased that she had contributed as a non-teacher, to the education of young minds.

I feel pleased, as a teacher, that we could use a nationally recognised professional to fuse together such diverse areas as economy, enterprise and spirituality.

All of this keeps 'Enterprise' in focus at BES whilst helping to educate students in a broad, rounded manner.  For further information on Clare click on www.madeinstroud.co.uk
